Heb Hebrews, chapter Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter 1
The Supremacy of the Son
On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. Num 12:6; 1Pe 1:10But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son,1:2 Or in His Son whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.1:2 Or the world; literally the agesPsa 2:8; Isa 9:6; Jhn 1:3; Jhn 8:26; Jhn 15:15; Gal 4:4; Eph 1:10
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for our sins,1:3 CT for sins He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Psa 110:1; 2Co 4:4; Eph 1:7; Col 1:15So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs. Php 2:9For to which of the angels did God ever say:
“You are My Son;
today I have become Your Father”1:5 Psalm 2:7; literally today I have begotten You?
Or again:
“I will be His Father,
and He will be My Son”1:5 2 Samuel 7:14; 1 Chronicles 17:13?Psa 2:7; 2Sa 7:14; 1Ch 17:13; Heb 5:5
And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says:
“Let all God’s angels worship Him.”1:6 Deuteronomy 32:43 (see DSS and LXX)Psa 97:7
Now about the angels He says:
“He makes His angels winds,
His servants flames of fire.”1:7 Psalm 104:4 (see also LXX)Psa 104:4
But about the Son He says:
“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever,
and justice is the scepter of Your kingdom.1:8 Literally the scepter of justice is the scepter of Your kingdomLuk 1:32
You have loved righteousness
and hated wickedness;
therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
above Your companions with the oil of joy.”1:9 Psalm 45:6–7Psa 45:6; Isa 61:1; Jhn 3:34; Act 4:27
And:
“In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of Your hands.
They will perish, but You remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.Isa 34:4; Isa 51:6; Mat 24:35
You will roll them up like a robe;
they will be changed;1:12 NA, SBL, and WH like a garment they will be changed
but You remain the same,
and Your years will never end.”1:12 Psalm 102:25–27Psa 102:25
Yet to which of the angels did God ever say:
“Sit at My right hand
until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”1:13 Psalm 110:1?Psa 110:1; Mrk 12:36; Mrk 16:19; Eph 1:20
Are not the angels1:14 Literally Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?Gen 19:16; Psa 34:7; Psa 91:11; Psa 103:21; Dan 7:10; Act 5:19
