Huvudpoängen är hur Guds rike börjar smått men kommer att växa. Samtidigt antyder liknelsen också att Gudsriket växer oproportionerligt. Ett planterat senapsfrö blir bara en buske, inte ett träd. Redan 30-60 dagar efter sådd kan man skörda senapsfrön från senapsbusken, som då är några decimeter hög. Busken kan växa vidare och bli 2-3 meter hög, men då ger den inte längre någon skörd. Här kan finnas en antydan om att Guds rike ger god frukt i de små sammanhangen. Surdegen är genomgående en bild på falska läror i Bibeln. Mitt i det växande Gudsriket finns det också ondska.
