Den andra kallelsen

”Res dig upp och gå till Nineve [Mosul i dagens Irak], den stora staden, och ropa (hebr. qara) [predika] mot den, det som jag talat till dig.”

[Vers 1-3a är snarlik Jona 1:1-3, med en stor skillnad – Jonas respons. I den första kallelsen flydde han till Tarshish, i den andra går han till Nineve. Den nästan ordagranna upprepningen visar också Herrens vilja att nå Nineve med den profetiska varningen. Gud gör det yttersta för att ge alla människor möjlighet till omvändelse, trots hans egen profets olydnad. Det finns flera paralleller i dessa två episoder. I båda fallen är Jona bland hedningar (sjömännen på båten och invånarna i Nineve). I båda berättelserna återges dialoger och många detaljer, hedningarna gensvarar på profetens ord, deras ledare (kaptenen och kungen) deltar aktivt i omvändelsen och Gud räddar dem. Sorgligt nog verkar Jona vid båda tillfällena oengagerad, frånvarande och ovillig att lyda Gud.]
