SKB De sa: ”Var är den judiske kungen som har fötts? Vi har sett hans stjärna gå upp och har kommit för att tillbe (hylla, vörda) honom.” [Bibeln nämner inte hur många de vise männen var. Enligt den tidiga kyrkans tradition var de tolv förnäma män, kanske judiska ättlingar till Daniel som blev ledare över ”alla visa” i Babylon, se Dan 2:48. De har också med sig tjänare och lastdjur så det är en hel karavan som anländer till Jerusalem. Det har nu gått en tid sedan Jesu födelse och familjen bor i ett hus, antagligen i Betlehem, se vers 11 som refererar till ”huset”. De har också varit i templet, se Luk 2:22-38. Enligt 3 Mos 12:2-4 skulle detta ske fyrtio dagar efter födseln. Om de vise männen färdats från Babylon var det en sträcka på ca hundra mil, men det kan ha varit det dubbla om de kom genom öknen från Persiska viken, vilket tog ca två till fyra månader.
