[Versen formar en kiasm där Guds nåd står centralt och ramas in av ”tidsangivelserna” evighet och släkte till släkte. Den yttre ramen utgörs av Herrens godhet och trofasthet/sanning. Den hebreiska texten har ki-tov JHVH (ordagrant: ”för god Jahveh”). Här finns inget ord för är med. Enligt det grekiska tänkesättet – som påverkat oss i väst – kan godhet existera oberoende av Gud. Godhet anses alltså inte som ett av Guds attribut. I den judiska världsbilden hör dock dessa två begrepp oskiljaktigt ihop. Det går inte att se godhet utan att se Gud. Att förneka Guds godhet är att förneka Gud själv. Det finns ingen godhet skild från Gud – Gud och godhet hör ihop. Genom hela Bibeln är nåd och sanning följeslagare, se 2 Sam 15:20; Ords 3:4; 16:6; Ps 85:11; Joh 1:14. Första gången dessa ord står tillsammans är i Guds eget vittnesbörd, se 2 Mos 34:6. Nåd utan sanning blir uddlös, medan sanning utan nåd blir obarmhärtig. Det behövs både nåd och sanning, och nåden nämns alltid först.]
