Abram hade nyligen avböjt erbjudandet från Sodoms kung att behålla ett krigsbyte och han har gett tionde till Melkisedek. Utifrån svaret i nästa vers, verkar det som att Abram tolkar det som en materiell belöning, men undrar vad detta spelar för roll när han inte har någon arvinge.
