På gudstjänsten under lördagsförmiddagen i synagogan läser man ett stycke från Moseböckerna (Torah-läsning) följt av ett avsnitt från profeterna (den sk. Haftarahläsningen). Detta är en tradition som funnits sedan länge. Torah-läsningen började under Esras tid medan Haftarah-läsningen kom till under mackabeertiden när grekerna förbjöd Torah-läsningen under några år. När Jesus i Matt 4:17 läser ett stycke från profeterna, är det just denna tradition som refereras till. Någon gång efter Jesu död och uppståndelse beslutades att utesluta detta stycke ur läsningen eftersom det orsakade argumentation och stor förvirring. Idag läser man Jes 51:12-52:12 (48:e veckan – Shoftim) och veckan efter är det Jes 54:1-10 (49:e veckan – Ki Tetze), dvs. man hoppar helt enkelt över Jes 52:13-53:12! ]
