Var inte förskräckt (rädd, uppskrämd) och var inte förfärad (bestört, modfälld, nedslagen), för Herren (Jahveh) din Gud (Elohim) är med dig vart du än går [överallt i det du gör]. [Mod är förmågan att övervinna sin fruktan och göra något man egentligen är rädd för. Fruktan förlamar medan frimodighet för med sig initiativförmåga och handlingskraft. I 4 Mos 27:16-23 utsåg Gud Josua till Moses efterträdare. Josua var en andefylld man som redan tidigare uppvisat mod (4 Mos 14:6-9), men Gud instruerade ändå Mose att styrka Josua i sitt uppdrag, se 5 Mos 1:38; 3:28. Även strax innan Mose avslutade sina jordiska dagar ingöt han mod i hela Israels folk och speciellt i Josua, se 5 Mos 31:6, 7, 23. Nu uppmanar Herren återigen Josua att vara stark och frimodig genom att stå fast och följa Guds undervisning. Styrkt av Herren befaller Josua Israels folk att göra sig redo för intåget i löfteslandet, se vers 16-18. Gud styrker och ingjuter mod hos dem som han kallar!
