Vad ”de sju åskorna” sa är den enda delen i denna bok som är dold. Guds röst liknas ofta vid åska, se Ps 29; Job 26:14; Joh 12:28-29, och sju står ofta för något fulländat och fullkomligt. I Upp 4:5 står det att det kom ”åska från tronen”, vilket också indikerar att det är Guds röst som Johannes hörde. Åska är ofta förknippat med dom, se 1 Sam 2:10; Upp 8:5; 11:19; 16:18. Troligtvis talar denna röst om Guds fullständiga och slutgiltiga dom över jorden. Det är dock meningslöst att spekulera kring vad som blev sagt, se 5 Mos 29:29.]
