Inför vittnens närvaro nedtecknades exakt samma köpekontrakt på två papyrusark. Båda rullades ihop, den ena förseglades med sigill medan den andra förblev öppen så att den kunde läsas. Vid en konflikt om ett landområde kunde en präst bryta sigillen, öppna originalhandlingen, och avgöra tvisten. Jesus är domaren som kan återlösa jorden som just nu är ”belägrad”.
