SKB [Paulus har nyss i ett par kapitel tagit upp hur mycket en kristen ska anpassa sig i en fallen värld. En av poängerna är att vi ibland måste ge upp vår frihet för att inte få en svagare broder på fall. I följande fyra kapitel handlar det om män och kvinnor i gudstjänsten och den praktiska ordningen. Det första Paulus tar upp är klädstil, och poängen är att både män och kvinnor ska klä sig på ett sätt som inte är utmanande eller stötande utifrån sin kultur. Klädstilen ska inte ta bort fokus från bönen eller profetian. Det verkar som om en del kvinnor hade tagit sin nyvunna frihet i Jesus för långt och inte följde den gängse normen att täcka sina huvuden. Paulus kunde ha löst problemet genom att helt och hållet förbjuda kvinnor att be och profetera i samlingarna; i stället ger han ett enkelt råd: män ska ha sina huvuden otäckta, medan kvinnor ska ha sina huvuden täckta. Problemet är att det inte är helt klart vad det innebar att täcka huvudet då, och hur det ska tolkas i dag. Genom tiderna har dessa verser missbrukats. Det hjälper dock förståelsen att se att Paulus troligtvis använder sig av ett kiastiskt mönster, där halva resonemanget finns före centrum och den andra halvan efter.
