Men då menade jag inte denna världens otuktiga människor i allmänhet eller giriga eller utsugare eller avgudadyrkare. I så fall måste ni ju gå ut från världen.

Jag menade inte alla sexuellt omoraliska här i världen, eller alla giriga (som strävar efter mer och mer ägodelar, men även makt och inflytande) och utsugare (bedragare, svindlare) [Ordet översätts ”rovlystna” i Matt 7:15.] eller alla avgudadyrkare. I så fall hade ni behövt lämna världen! [Paulus hade skrivit minst ett brev tidigare före detta brev, som vi kallar Första Korintierbrevet. I det förra brevet, som inte finns bevarat, hade man tolkat uppmaningen att inte ha nära samröre med människor som lever i uppenbar synd på fel sätt. Man hade inte tillämpat det internt i församlingen utan tänkte att det bara gällde andra människor ute i världen. Paulus visar på absurditeten i ett sådant synsätt. Paulus förespråkar inte klosterliv; en kristen ska leva i världen men inte av den. Jesus ber inte att lärjungarna ska tas ur världen, utan bevaras från den onde, se Joh 17:15-19.]
