Daniel hade framgång (blev befordrad, fick ära, rikedom och makt) under Dareios regeringstid, och (även) under persern Kyros (hebr. Koresh) regeringstid. [Texten kan läsas på två sätt. Antingen beskriver den hur Dareios och Kyros är två samtida ledare. I så fall är Dareios guvernören som Kyros satte över staden Babylon, och som historiskt sett skulle kunna vara en general vid namn Gubaru, se Dan 1:1. Den hebreiska konjunktionen vav översätts vanligtvis med ”och”, men kan också översättas ”även”. I så fall blir den andra delen en förklaring och förtydligande: ”även, det vill säga, under persern Kyros regeringstid”. Daniel indikerar då att medern Dareios, se Dan 5:31, är samma person som persern Kyros. Det som försvårar tolkningen är att samma personer har olika namn i olika regioner, det gäller ju även Daniel och hans vänner, se Dan 1:7.
