Sedan sa Jesus till dem: ”Människosonen är herre över sabbaten.” [Vissa delar av lagen kunde brytas utan att det var ett lagbrott, särskilt om det gällde att rädda liv. För David och hans män gällde det deras liv i denna situation. Denna princip praktiserades redan av Mose. Ett exempel på detta finns i 3 Mos 10:12-20, som bröt mot 3 Mos 6:16, men Mose tillät och godkände det. Ett annat exempel på lagbrott är det arbete som prästerna utförde på sabbaten; de tilläts arbeta för att utföra Herrens sysslor. På Jesu tid praktiserade man att i vissa fall bryta mot lagen om det fanns ett viktigare bud. Man omskar pojkar på åttonde dagen även om det var på sabbaten, se Joh 7:22. Man räddade även djur och människor vars liv var i fara, se Luk 14:5. Jesus lyfter tydligt fram denna högsta princip om att ”rädda liv” i Mark 3:4.]
