Det ordet användes inte av egyptierna själva, de hade namnet Tavi som betyder ”två länder” och troligtvis syftar på övre och nedre Egypten. Det hebreiska ordet Mitsrajim härstammar från namnet på Chams (Hams) andra son Mitsrajim (1 Mos 10:6).
