För att vara säker på att inte utföra ett arbete tillredde rättrogna judar därför maten på fredagseftermiddagen före sabbaten. Det var troligt att Jesu lärjungar följde dessa judiska seder, se Luk 23:56, men här var man på resande fot och kunde inte förbereda någon mat.]
