För den som vill rädda (skulle vilja bevara) sitt liv, ska mista (förlora; totalt förstöra/ruinera) det, men den som mister (nu ändå skulle mista) sitt liv för min skull, han ska rädda (han är den som kommer att bevara) det. [Gr. psuche betecknar både liv och själ, men måste förstås och användas utifrån sitt sammanhang i vers 25-26, se även Joh 12:25. Att ’förneka sig själv’ i vers 24 handlar inte om brist på självaktning. Jesu efterföljare har skäl till en bättre självkänsla än någon annan. Genom saligprisningarna visar Jesus vad det innebär att tillhöra Guds rike och få den himmelska lönen, se Matt 5:3-12. I ljuset av detta förstår vi att självförnekelsen handlar om att korsfästa sina egna själviska intressen och ambitioner och sätta Gud och hans rike främst.
