Namnet Barabbas betyder ordagrant ”en faders son”. Hans fullständiga namn var troligen Jesus Barabbas. Vissa manuskript har det längre namnet, medan andra bara har Barabbas. Folket får nu välja mellan Jesus Barabbas, en faders son som var en falsk messias och Jesus Messias, Guds Son som var den äkta Messias.
