[Hebreiska elem i vers 2 kan översättas både som gudar i plural eller hänföras till roten alam som betyder tyst, tigande. Den inledande frasen blir till en ironisk fråga: ”Talar ni rättfärdighet i tysthet?” Det finns en dubbelhet i vad ”gudar” syftar på. Det kan syfta på änglar och då särskilt onda makter, se Ps 82:1; Dan 10:13. Det kan också tala om korrupta ledare här på jorden. Uttrycken ”era händer”, ”på jorden” och beskrivningen i vers 4-6 antyder att det gäller onda domare.
