Det hebreiska ordet för överlämnar betyder att överlämna något i någons vård, men här finns också bilden på en deposition, där någon lämnar något och sedan får tillbaka det. Inom judendomen citeras ofta denna vers som avslutning på den dagliga kvällsbönen. Tanken är att man överlämnar sin ande till Gud för att han ska ha den i tryggt förvar under natten.
