Ert skrytande [om era lärare och hur allt är väl i församlingen] är helt opassande. [Paulus uppmanar församlingen att ta ansvar. De ska inte vänta på att han ska komma och lösa problemet åt dem, men han ger råd hur han skulle agerat om han varit på plats. Mannen som levde med sin fars hustru agerade helt uppenbart både mot Guds bud och romersk lag och församlingen blundade för det. Paulus säger inte att de ska stena honom, vilket skulle varit den judiska lösningen. Han uppmanar dem inte heller att processa fallet i domstol, vilket skulle varit den romerska lösningen. I stället säger han att de som församling gemensamt ska ta avstånd från honom och överlämna honom till Satan, chocken att se vem hans verklige herre är, kanske kan leda till omvändelse. Denna historia får ett lyckligt slut, i 2 Kor 2:5-8 har mannen omvänt sig och är tillbaka i gemenskapen.
